About
Hi, thanks for visiting The Spin Dr.
Let me introduce myself, I am Sammy Peeps, DJ and electronics tinkerer based in Edinburgh, Scotland.
I first fell in love with DJ culture around 1996 when my local store in Leeds had a number of Vestax CD units, mixers and turntables in stock. At the time I was 15 and definitely couldn't afford any of the hardware, but I could afford the odd VHS of DMC or ITF events, so I hope I didn't piss the staff off too much by being in there all day every weekend. ha.
I first burnt my hand on my dads soldering at the tender age of 3, and despite that it wasn't too many years later that I started to build stuff with my dad. Weekends and school holidays was a time for soldering if I wanted to earn a bit of cash, and so at the age of 17 I got my first set of Soundlab turntables and a Gemini PMX 140.
Some years later I got my first Vestax, the PMC 07 Pro. I added a few PDX2000s and got a residency for 8 years at the Cab Vol in Edinburgh ramping out DnB to a full club week after week. I maintained those decks for years and did any necessary repairs as they arose.
I then finished Uni and persued a career in design, which I still do, but in a bid to get back to the tools and away from the computer I started to fix up broken turntables. I revived a PDX3000 and an 07Pro which I then gifted to my pals lad who was showing an interest in turntablism, and I couldn't have been happier to facilitate some new blood getting into scratching.
Then it was time to tackle the Technics. I was warming up for a well known DJ here in Edinburgh and the clubs 1200s were in a horrible state, jumping all over the place and looked like they were living in a hen house. So I took a deep dive into SL1200s, bought some Japanese market units, made my own PSUs and got on a mission to revive and restore these old units.
So I might not be an Electrical Engineer, that falls to my Dad to help out (he's retired but loves that I'm now picking up a soldering iron again) but I have years of experience soldering as well as assembling electronics, and nearly 30 years behind the decks. Subsequently I love to restore and improve where possible, so ask me about the Phase Loop Lock mod for the Technics and why I find it to be the most useful mod for DJ culture. Or drop me a line and we can talk the minutiae of DJ turntables.
Thanks for stopping by, I hope you find something exciting!
And please bare with me, the site is very new and so I'll be making tweaks! Let me know if you spot any bugs!
